I can’t be the only one who likes a little bit of emotional damage when I read a romance book. Sure, sometimes it’s nice to read something light, but sometimes I just want my heart ripped out and pieced back together so that I’m left staring at the ceiling long after the last page. Maybe I’m a masochist for loving romance books that will emotional wreck you, but I personally think I just like to feel things!

Perhaps it’s genuine heartbreak before the HEA, a book that explores themes of grief or loss, a character facing a truly impossible choice, or maybe it’s just that the Happy Ever After (HEA) is hard-won…these are some of the best emotional romance books in my opinion, because they make us feel all the feels. So if you’ve got the tissues handy and are ready to hurt in all the best ways, here are some books to cry to that serve a nice portion of emotional devastation with the love story and eventual HEA.

One of the greatest gifts that literature gives us is the chance to experience someone else’s life and perspectives. Even if it’s fictional—honestly, even if it’s not set in our own world—empathizing with a character’s story makes us human.

Books that make you cry hard are also safe in their own way. They let us experience the full gamut of emotions without us actually having to be in that situation in real life.

Emotional romance books offer an extra sense of security, though—they have a guaranteed HEA. Because readers know that the Happy Ever After awaits them, they know that they can step into a world of soul crushing romance books and they’ll still have a happy ending to await them.

Honestly, the guaranteed HEA is the greatest strength of romance books. Readers can explore heavier topics and see how people who have faced great hardship, immense trauma, or challenging circumstances still get to have good things happen in their lives. It’s funny, romantic, and emotional and does the enemies to lovers trope really well.

• Morbidly Yours by Ivy Fairbanks
  A widow and an undertaker fall in love in this cute romance set in Galway. Lark moves there for a job (and a fresh start) after losing her husband, and it just so happens she’s moved in next door to a socially awkward funeral director. We get to experience gems of Ireland through her eyes, and we witness a wonderful friendship (and eventually something more) develop with Callum as he struggles to date and lock down a wife in order to legally inherit his family’s business. This book is incredibly heartfelt and will make you want to read other romance books set in Ireland!

• If Things Were Different by Megan McSpadden
  After devastating losses, both Blythe and Sam have adjusted to a new normal. Both of them are emotionally haunted by the people they’ve lost—Blythe by her late husband and Sam by his parents. When they both find themselves at a destination wedding, they both decide they can break a few rules, hook up, and escape their realities for a little while. It’s all just a bunch of no-strings-attached fun until they’re faced with the questions of what they really want and who they really want to live for. Bonus points for a Scottish MMC…ifykyk.

• Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan
  Yasmen and Josiah have experienced some devastating losses in their time together, and are now co-parenting and running a thriving business together…even if they aren’t together. But with all those years of shared history, they find themselves wondering if their story is really over, or if they are truly meant to be. Kennedy Ryan books have characters that feel so real and you can’t help but root for them. Her writing will devastate you in the best way.

• Into the Blue by Emma Brodie

Whenever I read Roni Loren books, I honestly forget I’m reading fiction because the characters are so well-developed and their dialogue feels so natural.

• The Best Worst Thing by Lauren Okie
  Nicole’s life comes crashing down, leaving her jobless and husbandless. So she finds herself on Logan’s doorstep—a former colleague who welcomes her back into his life like no time has passed. But just as Nicole is getting her life back on track, she gets word that the surrogate she and her ex-husband had used is officially pregnant. Pulled between her past, present, and future, Nicole must decide if she’s really ready to accept love from the greatest man she’s ever known. Logan is a golden retriever book boyfriend that will have you swooning with how supportive he is, making this a must-read.

• Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane
  Eve has a core friend group from college (which includes her long-time crush, Ed), and all of their lives are changed one fateful night. As Eve grapples with her new reality, a surprising secret comes to light and makes her rethink everything she knew about her closest friends. Eve goes on quite an emotional journey, and it’s so satisfying to see her growth throughout the book. If you’re looking for a book to cry to with found family and even a road trip, this is the one.

• The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros
  A promise between friends Beckett into Ella’s life under heartbreaking circumstances. Ella is just fine taking care of her business and her twins on her own, but when Beckett walks into her life, it’s hard to say no to the extra help—especially with her daughter’s sickness. And, even more since her kids adore Beckett. These two find solace in each other in even the darkest times, showing just how strong the bonds of love can be. Definitely grab the tissues for this one.

• The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez
  Although Abby Jimenez writes romcoms, I find that her books often touch on some really tough subjects sometime. This was my first book from her, and it really sent me on a roller coaster, both with laugh-out-loud moments and cry-your-heart-out moments. Kristen meets Josh, and he’s kind of her perfect guy. Except for one major issue: he wants to have a big family someday and Kristen isn’t able to have kids. She knows he’ll be happier with someone else, but the more they get to know each other, the harder it is to ignore their chemistry.

• For the Love of Whiskey by Melissa Foster
  Sullivan has gone through some serious trauma, having lived in and escaped a cult. Finally having freedom, she doesn’t expect to fall for an overprotective, super-sexy cowboy. He seems to understand her better than she understands herself, and she battles with trust not only of other people but of herself. After all, she’s only just starting to understand who she is in the real world. Sully’s strength will leave you speechless, and you will be rooting for her HEA with every page!

😭 EMOTIONAL BUT HOPEFUL ROMANCES 😭

• Promise Me Sunshine by Cara Bastone
  At first glance, this book is unbelievably sad—Lenny is in the throes of grief after losing her best friend and roommate. But the author’s writing style and Lenny’s quirky, fun, and humorous approach to life despite her grief is what makes this book so memorable. As Lenny struggles to not let anyone see the pain she’s experiencing and continues babysitting, the uncle of a kid she watches, Miles, somehow sees right through her. Evidently, he understands grief and loss better than Lenny knows. So they strike an agreement: Miles helps Lenny through her grief, and Lenny helps the grumpy Miles in his complicated relationship with his niece and family. I love a romance where he falls first, and this one will have you crying and laughing simultaneously.

• What If You & Me by Roni Loren
  Roni Loren writes wonderfully grounded romances, and this one is probably my favorite from her. Andi is a horror novelist and true crime podcaster who secretly battles anxiety after a near-disaster she narrowly escaped years ago. When someone breaks into her place, her gruff neighbor and former firefighter, Hill, rushes in to play the hero. He’s battling his own demons after losing part of his leg in a rescue gone wrong, and the two of them form an unlikely pair. These two must learn to be vulnerable with each other, and it is so beautiful to see!

• Flying by Jordana Blake
  Lily has been searching for the place she belongs for ages, almost always content to start over again than to put down roots and build something real. River’s got secrets that he knows could ruin his chances with the one who got away, but now that she’s back in town to celebrate a friend’s engagement, he doesn’t know how long he can ignore his true feelings. If you like laughing through the sadness, this “traum-com” will be the perfect romance book to cry to.

• One Golden Summer by Carley Fortune
  Carley Fortune’s books aren’t ever overly depressing, but they are always packed full of emotions. One Golden Summer is probably my top pick of her books, because this one had me yearning like there was no tomorrow. Alice returns with her grandmother to the lake house she went to as a child and runs into Charlie, basically her exact opposite. Whereas Alice is a bit Type A and happy to exist in the background, Charlie is outgoing, affable, and charming. Despite this, he keeps Alice at arm’s length, and their summer at the lake is a push and pull of attraction, secrets, and broken rules. This book is perfect for readers who want a heartfelt love story that will have smiling through your tears.

😭 EMOTIONAL SLOW BURN ROMANCE BOOKS 😭

• All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata
  Zapata is the queen of slow burn romance books. I love reading her books because I know I always get a chance to really get to know the characters before complicated romantic emotions are thrown into the mix. Aurora is at a point where she’s starting her life over, so she heads to a small mountain town…and it just so happens she has a handsome, very grumpy neighbor next door. This book has a bit of everything—banter, humor, and tender moments that will have you tearing up.

• The Half of It by Theresa Christine
  The only family June ever knew let her down, so when she discovers a half sister in Ireland, she’s not even inclined to go…except that it could be a make-or-break moment for her writing career. She she heads to a small town in County Kerry to get to know this newfound family, and she meets Aidan, her half sister’s best friend. He’s got his own complicated, painful past, but the two of them seem to understand each other in a way no one else does. Watching them go from strangers to friends to something more is absolutely heartwarming, and when the slow burn starts burning, it is definitely hot. This is a slow burn romance on KU!

• The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker
  When her father lets her know that he has a limited time to live and wants to right some of his wrongs, Calla reluctantly travels to the small town in Alaska where she was born. Jonah is something like a son to Calla’s father, so the two of them are at odds from the moment she arrives. It also doesn’t help that she’s lived a pretty pampered city girl life up until now, and Jonah is a pilot who has never had an easy life. As the two of them form an unexpected bond—friendship, or maybe even something deeper—Call is left questioning everything she’s ever known. This is one of my favorite romance books of all time and the one I suggest to anyone wanting to read some K.A. Tucker.

• All the Days Before Tomorrow by Rebecca Brodkey
  When Ruby underwent breast cancer treatment, her writing dreams screeched to a halt. So when her bestselling author and former BFF asks for wedding help in exchange to make an intro to her literary agent, Ruby jumps at the chance to revive her career. She pairs up with Eitan, the best man and sunshine in human form, but Ruby quickly learns that there is much more to him than meets the eye. These two see each other more deeply and honestly than any other people have before, and it forces them to reckon with what they really want.

Are emotional romance books always sad?

Not always! Some romance authors choose to tackle these heavier topics with humor so they have more romcom vibes. You’ll still feel all the feels, but the overall atmosphere of the book may be lighter. And, ultimately, while the journey of a romance book may cause you to shed some (or even a lot of) tears, romance novels also deliver an emotionally satisfying ending with the HEA. While the journey the characters go on may make your heart ache, readers can expect hope by the end.

What’s the difference between women’s fiction and emotional romance?

While these two genres are definitely similar, there is an important distinction. In women’s fiction, the protagonist’s personal journey is the star of the show. This may include elements of romance, but the romance is not the main plot. In romance books, the romantic relationship is the central storyline.
