Why We Love a Good “He Falls First” Romance Book

There are some tropes that will have me giggling and kicking my feet without fail, and “He Falls First” is one of them.

The longer he’s pined and secretly harbored feelings the better, if you ask me! I just love seeing a Male Main Character (MMC) realize he has feelings well before it’s even something on the Female Main Character’s (FMC) radar. He has to keep his feelings hidden because of ~reasons~? He keeps doing little acts of service or small kindnesses for the FMC just because? Can everyone around them see that he’s down bad except her? That kind of setup is my catnip.

The thing I love about He Falls First romance books is that those feelings are often quiet at first. This is a romance book trope with heaps of yearning. The MMC pines and overthinks, all while falling even harder for the FMC. He is hopelessly into her—just the right amount of pathetic, I like to say—and it has me squealing with joy once the FMC finally catches on.

It doesn’t matter what romance subgenre or other tropes you read—small-town romance books, a steamy friends-to-lovers story, or a vacation romance novel set in paradise—the He Falls First trope is unmatched. Here’s what to look for in these books and some of the best he falls first romance books on KU, ebook, and paperback.

What Makes “He Falls First” So Satisfying?

The He Falls First trope is one of those that can work in a variety of subgenres and blends well with other tropes. It’s not polarizing to readers (like a surprise pregnancy trope, for instance), and it can add some delightful emotional depth to a romance. Plus, who doesn’t love a man who’s down bad? But we can point to a few more specific things as to why books where he falls first and harder have us romance readers in a chokehold.

We Get to Watch Him Yearn

I personally want the MMC to be almost miserable with how much he feels for the FMC. I want him to hurt so good, but I also want him to know that he would rather pine forever than to ever get over her. I want romance books with yearning that is off the charts! There’s just something about him trying to contain his true feelings and the vulnerability he ultimately has to embrace in admitting how he feels that makes romance books where he falls first so appealing.

It Makes the Romance Feel More Intentional

The best he falls first romance books build up the chemistry between the characters, even before a first kiss. When we know that the MMC has been pining after the love interest for a while, it builds up the anticipation of the budding romance. If his feelings are treated as more of a reveal, it gives the readers a moment to readjust how they view his interactions with the FMC and swoon over every small thing he does or says.

More than anything, though, the books where he falls and he falls harder lets us readers know he chooses her early on, and it gives us an unspoken reassurance that the MMC is all in. We might have to wait a little while the FMC catches up emotionally, but He Falls First Goodreads book lovers know that the male main character has no doubts in his mind when it comes to how he feels. That sort of decisiveness is incredibly attractive and makes for the best book boyfriends!

The Best Moments in a “He Falls First” Romance

Romance book tropes build anticipation for readers as they look out for common key moments, and He Falls First romances are no different. There are scenes that are often fan faves because they make us feel the depth of his feelings for the FMC, and it makes our heart ache for them to reach their eventual HEA. Here are some of my favorite moments in these types of books:

  • When the MMC does acts of service for her - In he falls first books, the MMC knows he’s down bad and is fully aware that the FMC may never feel the same—so when he does something for her, whether big or small, simply because, it is a truly swoon-worth moment.

  • When he remembers tiny details - Bonus points if he tries to convince himself that remembering exactly how she takes her coffee or what her guilty pleasure TV show is means nothing at all..even if we readers know better.

  • When the FMC finally realizes the depth of his feelings - It’s so much fun to see her reevaluate all of their past interactions and see him in a new light.

  • When he is protective of her like a boyfriend, even though they aren’t together - I’m not a fan of an MMC who is overprotective in a toxic way, but a little protectiveness—especially when she is oblivious to his emotions—will always have me kicking my feet.

  • When he realizes he’s down bad and there’s nothing he can do about it - It’s like trying to look away from a car accident—he knows it’s happening and it’s terrifying, but he can’t help how he feels. When he just accepts that he is falling for her and nothing could get in the way of his feelings…it’s one of my favorite romance book moments.

Recommended “He Falls First” Romance Books

Looking for some of the best He Falls First trope books? Here are some trad and indie romance reads that I love and think you will too!

Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood
Ali Hazelwood frequently writes MMCs who have been pining away for years like it’s their job. Love, Theoretically is my favorite of her first series—Jack is prime book boyfriend material. He is such a patient ma, not just with getting his chance with Elsie, but also in their interactions during the spicy scenes.

In a Jam by Kate Canterbary
Noah loved Shay back in high school but never told a soul—he was the awkward, uncool kid who never had the guts to ask out the beautiful, popular girl. Shay ends up moving back to her small hometown after grandmother dies, and in order to keep her grandma’s farm, she must marry within a year. This is one of those spicy he falls first romance books that will have you swooning.

In a Desert Daze by Theresa Christine
Max Weber, the man that you are! Max and Daisy are childhood friends who never crossed the line into something more, no matter how much Max might have secretly wanted it. When the art start-up he works for goes under, he returns to his small desert hometown and reunites with Daisy, and the two of them decide to team up on a project that could save both of their careers. For He Falls First Romance Books Kindle Unlimited offers, this is one you’ll definitely want to read. Read it on KU now!

Lovelight Farms by B.K. Borison
Sometimes an FMC is just so blissfully unaware of how the MMC feels about her. Some people might find it annoying, but it is one of my personal favorite things to read. In Lovelight Farms, Stella and her best friend Luka fake date in order for her to win a cash prize that could save her Christmas tree farm. It’s a perfect he falls first book for holiday reading.

Rinkmates by Nova Banks
This he falls first romance book on KU that has such a delicious setup: a hotheaded hockey player in need of some PR repair, a figure skater seeking a celeb partner for a reality show, and a fake relationship romance that is mutually beneficial. It’s a spicy sports romance for anyone who’s watched the winter Olympics and yearned for an ice skating romance book.

Beach Read by Emily Henry
This was my first Emily Henry book and possibly my favorite! Augustus and January are polar opposites, but they’re spending the summer in neighboring beach houses—both of them broke and battling writer’s block. They agree to write in each other’s genres to break out of it and end up finding an undeniable chemistry they can’t ignore.

When We Were Us by Madison Noelle
Second chance girlies, rise up! Wrenley broke Hank’s heart seventeen years ago, but now she’s back in Timber Forge, Montana. This one has so much gut-wrenching emotion that will have you rooting all the way for their HEA. Hank knows he should stay away because he wants to protect his heart, but after so many years apart, he can’t deny the pull he feels to her. I love seeing an MMC who tries his hardest not to fall but can’t help but fall hard anyway.

One Glimpse Inside by Becca Fall
All of the eldest daughters will love this romance book. Ariadne has always kept her family together, but when family obligations force her out on her own, she needs to find a place to stay, and fast. A cousin of her best friend’s boyfriend has a room, but he’s not exactly the warmest, most welcoming roommate. But the longer they spend together, the more that their temporary arrangement turns into deep conversations and romantic sparks. It’s always so rewarding to see a grumpy, closed-off MMC fall first and hard for the FMC.

Risk It All by Izabela Kamila
Eliza has no interest in commitment of any kind, so she’s happy flirting with tourists who stop by the bar she works at and teaching at her yoga studio. But when her ex’s older brother comes back to town and becomes her new coworker (and neighbor!), things get complicated. It doesn’t help that there was an almost-kiss three years ago, so rather than ignore their chemistry, they decide to do a friends with benefits arrangement. If you like romance books where he falls first and he falls harder, then you’ll love this one.

Honestly, I’m Totally Faking It by Amanda Gambill
It’s always so satisfying in grumpy/sunshine trope books when we finally see the tender-hearted side of the MMC. This romcom will have you laughing as much as it will have you swooning over the romance between Rach and Pres. This is an opposites attract romance with some fake dating and a workplace situation, so there is a lot of juicy conflict that makes the HEA all the more worth it.

It’s easy to see why readers adore romance books where he falls first. The MMC falls for the love interest, knowing that his feelings may never be reciprocated—but he knows there’s nothing that can stop him from loving them, either. Whether it’s secretly pining from afar, acts of service that she doesn’t notice, or him scrambling to figure out how to hide his real feelings, it’s so swoony to see a male main character fall first.
