The Best Romance Books Set in the Desert

From beachside resorts to quaint mountain towns, destination romance books let us pack our proverbial bags and travel somewhere incredible through the pages of a novel. And one of my favorite places to go? The desert.

There’s something magical about the desert, and yes, incredibly romantic. The danger and beauty of the landscape, the flora and fauna thriving in such a challenging place, and the sunsets that look like someone smeared watercolors in the sky…it’s an unforgettable place. No wonder there are a number of escapist romance reads set in the desert!

If you’d like some desert romance books recs, then you’ve come to the right place! I’ve put together a list of some of my faves for you to check out.

Why Desert Settings Make Romance So Intense

Deserts bring the kind of tension and heat that we want to see reflected in our romance reads. Being in the desert isn’t easy at first, but once you grow accustomed to the dry heat and learn how to love the beauty in all of the landscape’s imperfections, you will never be the same. So a desert setting makes for atmospheric romance books that can tug at our heartstrings.

There’s something about the desert that forces vulnerability, too—it strips us down to our basic wants and needs. It’s hard for a character to hide from their feelings when it’s just them and that person, a wide open sky, and a load of unresolved feelings. So a lot of the best romance books set in the desert lean into that vulnerability, letting the landscape reflect some of those emotional moments. The setting can really enhance what the characters are going through.

Desert romance books can take place all over—whether it’s books set in Arizona, books set in the Mojave Desert, or broader stories set across the American Southwest, desert romances feel cinematic and special. Although the desert isn’t necessarily people’s first choice when they think of an armchair destination romance book, once they read a little and get transported there, they get the appeal.

FYI: when I say desert romance books, I’m not talking about sheikh romances. Those are their own specific subgenre within romance, typically centered around fictional royal families and billionaire fantasy tropes. This list includes more grounded contemporary romances and western romance stories set in literal desert landscapes.

What Makes a Great Desert Romance Book?

I can’t speak for everyone, but there are a few things that the best romance books set in the desert will capture:

  • sizzling heat (and no, I don’t just mean the actual temperatures…I mean steamy romance books set in the desert 🔥)

  • emotionally messy characters — there’s something about the harsh desert landscape that makes me yearn for characters who have overcome traumas or immense personal challenges.

  • small town vibes — Not a must, but definitely a plus for me! Something about the desert just feels right for a small-town romance.

  • settings that are vivid enough to feel the dust on my skin — I don’t want the setting to fade into the background; instead, I want the details to burn a clear image into my mind.

  • tension and conflict pushing the main couple together — The desert landscape is vast, so there has to be a juxtaposition where we see how, even in such a wide-open place, the main couple can’t escape the each other even if they tried.

  • a sense of isolation or escape — This is a dreamy destination, so give me that sense of really traveling there and what it really feels like to be there.

  • Bonus points if there’s a quirky roadside shop or diner involved

Desert settings are also ideal for the cowboy romance subgenre. There’s a reason spicy cowboy romance books on Kindle Unlimited are having such a moment right now…ranches, remote towns, horses, and hard-working men who get their world turned upside down by love? It’s simply irresistible.

Desert Romance Books That Bring the Heat

Below are the best contemporary romance books set in the desert for adults to add to your TBR!

Something Wilder by Christina Lauren
I am a huge Christina Lauren fan, and when I heard about this book, I immediately knew I had to read it. It’s got a mix of romance, adventure, and CLo’s classic romcom humor. Lily leads adventure trips in the red rock canyons of Utah, and her newest group of travelers includes Leo, a man she once loved. When their trip goes off the rails, the two of them have the chance to right their past wrongs and risk their hearts on an adventure of a lifetime.

Fever Dream by Elsie Silver
Elsie Silver is the queen of contemporary cowboy romances with the most real and relatable characters. There’s just something about all of her books that feels really grounded and makes you feel like you’re there. Fever Dream is a small-town, forbidden, rivals-to-lovers romance set in the West. In order to save his family’s ranch, Emmett agrees to be the leading man on a hot new reality dating show. When the little sister of his most bitter professional rival steps onto set as the location consultant for the show, things get complicated—after all, he’s supposed to fall in love with one of the contestants. This book combines a desert romance book with lots of fun tropes, so it’s a really enjoyable read.

Wait for It by Jenn McKinlay
This is such a heartwarming read! After rejecting a marriage proposal (from her ex-husband, no less), Annabelle decides she needs a change of scenery. With a job opportunity in Phoenix, she moves there and rents a guest house from a curmudgeonly, elderly man…or, actually, a curmudgeonly, not-so-elderly man. Nick has his own demons and struggles due to a stroke he had, and as a result, he’s put up walls and barriers to protect himself. Despite his gruff exterior, Annabelle and Nick can’t help but be drawn to each other, and together they try to find the courage to embrace life, happiness, and love. As a book set in the American Southwest, this is a really lovely story that has urban desert vibes.

In a Desert Daze by Theresa Christine
Max returns to his small desert hometown after a scandal causes his art career to implode. There, he reconnects with his childhood best friend slash crush, Daisy, and she’s dealing with her own job problems at the small hotel she runs. They team up on a project that could save both of their careers, and in the process dig up those long-buried feelings they had for one another. This is an emotional romance book with the friends to lovers trope, so expect lots of angst, yearning, and spice. Plus, it’s a destination romance book on KU!

Guarded Treasure by Mae Lovette
A romance book with The Mummy vibes? I’m sold. Edith gets the opportunity of a lifetime to be the translator on an infamous crew exploring ancient tombs. Tomb raider Benjamin is used to being in charge, so he’s surprised when Edith steps onto the scene—she’s an infuriating know-it-all who made his heart stop the moment he saw her. This is a fun steamy romance book set in the desert with just the right amount of mystery, adventure, and romance.

Strictly Business by Kallista Kohl
A luxury resort in Sedona is the perfect setting for a spicy romance book in the desert. Izabelle is not one to mix business and pleasure. She’s a one-woman CEO who can handle everything herself…except she desperately needs help with a pitch. That’s where Jake comes in. After a chance encounter in Sedona, Izabelle asks Jake for his help. But Jake has his own secrets, and as they spend more time together, the lines between personal and professional blur.

The Lovers by Rebekah Faubion
There are few places more romantic than Joshua Tree, California, so this is one of the best destination romance books set in the desert. Life is falling apart for tarot reader and mystic influencer Kit, so she accepts a gig at a boho-chic Joshua Tree wedding. She doesn’t expect to run into Julia, her ex, and the wedding planner running the show. Wedding events keep pushing them together, and it’s hard to ignore the spark between them. But these two have to work through past hurts if they have any chance at finding their way back to each other.

Two Man Station by Lisa Henry
This book takes you to the desert landscape in Australia. After his professional reputation disintegrates, police officer Gio gets transferred to a small outback town. He wants a simple life: to keep his head down and not deal with any more complications. Jason, the officer in charge at this new station, is a stressed single dad who isn’t exactly happy that Gio’s been transferred to his watch, but the two have to work together whether they like it or not. It’s just the two of them in close quarters at a remote two-man station hours away from civilization, and the two of them have to learn to trust each other. Professional lines start to blur, and they must decide if they’re willing to risk their hearts for each other.

Rein Me In by Kayla Grosse
This is a steamy romance book with a desert setting that has all the feels. Blake returns to her hometown to help out on her family’s ranch, hit with the grief over her brother who passed five years prior. Gavin is stepping up for his family as well after his father’s death. When Blake sees Gavin, her late brother’s best friend, he’s no longer the sweet young boy she remembers. The more these two get to really know each other, the more it’s clear they can work through their grief together and ride off into the sunset for an HEA. But grief isn’t easy, and they both have to be willing to be vulnerable in order to make it work.

Whether you love rugged desert landscapes, charming small towns in the West, survival tension, or incredible romantic adventures, there’s just something irresistible about a romance set in the desert.
