What Is an Estranged Friends-to-Lovers Romance?

An estranged friends to lovers romance focuses on two characters who once shared a close bond—maybe as childhood neighbors, best friends, or even just shy of something more. Since this time, they’ve fallen out of each other’s lives, but they’ve never really forgotten each other. Unlike a classic friends-to-lovers arc, these romance novels have the added complications of distance, unresolved conflict, and a shared past with complicated feelings. You’ll often see this trope in an estranged childhood friends romance or a childhood friends to lovers book romance, and it raises the emotional stakes. They both know the connection was once there and since has been lost, and we get to see how much the two characters will fight for each other this time around.

The Best Estranged Friends-to-Lovers Romances (a.k.a. Friends to Strangers to Lovers)

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

This is probably the best-known example of a friends-to-strangers-to-lovers romance, and for good reason. Poppy and Alex have an immediate connection when they meet in college, and they build a tradition of traveling together every year…until something breaks them apart. Years later, they decide to go on one last trip to salvage their friendship. I love that we get to follow these characters around the world, and—no surprise, since it’s Emily Henry—the MMC is super swoony and devoted. If you’re looking for friends to lovers romance books Goodreads readers consistently rank at the top, this is it.

In a Desert Daze by Theresa Christine

Max and Daisy haven’t seen each other since he left their small desert town to chase his dreams—something Daisy encouraged, even if it took him away from her. After years of silence (and a few lingering voicemails because, yes, they miss each other’s voices), he’s back in Harlow, California, and they can no longer ignore the spark between them. This estranged friends to lovers romance novel gives us vignettes of their past. We also get to see in the present timeline how they tackle the thing that has kept them apart, as well as the undeniable connection that keeps them together. Max is a top-tier yearner, and bonus points, a bit of a dirty talker in bed! Bonus: it’s a Kindle Unlimited friends to lovers romance!

The Alpha’s Pen Pal by Allie Carsten

What happens when you take an estranged childhood friends romance, add in the pen pal trope, and give it a paranormal twist? Wesley (a werewolf) and Haven (a human) were childhood pen pals, but they lose touch—until years later, they meet in person because Haven ends up moving close to where Wesley’s pack is. Haven is certainly wary, since Wesley cut off communication right when she really needed him. But neither of them truly forgot about each other, and the sparks between them are too hot to handle. There’s something special about a childhood friends to lovers book where the emotional connection started long before the romantic one. I am a sucker for characters who connect via snail mail, and this one packs in a lot of emotions before the HEA.

A Thousand Miles by Bridget Morrissey

Ben and Dee were high school best friends who made a pact to reunite in ten years and open a time capsule…except their friendship imploded long before that. When Ben discovers a family secret that turns his world upside down, he reunites with Dee in order to fulfill that time-capsule promise. If you love the best spicy friends to lovers books with forced proximity, you’ll be rooting for these two to re-route their future because they both obviously care about each other so deeply.

It’s Different This Time by Joss Richard

As her acting career in LA stalls, June has some mild interest in getting back into the theater scene in NYC. At the same time, she receives an incredible opportunity that would earn her ownership over a brownstone in New York. The catch? She’d have to live in that West Village brownstone for a month with Adam, her former best friend. Being under the same roof again means confronting old feelings and past hurts, all while both of these characters want to protect their own hearts since their friendship breakup was so painful for them both. If you’re hunting for a romance novel spicy friends to lovers books vibe with an NYC setting and a chef MMC (yes, please), then definitely pick this one up.

Devil of Dublin by B.B. Easton

The content warning will let you know if this is the book for you: it’s intended for mature audiences who enjoy dark subject matter, tortured anti-heroes, explicit adult content, graphic violence, heart-pounding suspense, fairy-tale worthy love, and gorgeous Irish scenery. If that doesn’t scare you away, then for readers who love their romance dark and intense, Devil of Dublin is a standout among childhood friends to lovers books dark romance. This gritty romance is between Darby and Kellen, who meet as children when Darby visits her grandfather. Eventually, Darby stops visiting, but the two of them re-meet as adults. Darby’s now engaged to someone else, and Kellen is no longer the battered-and-bruised ten-year-old boy, but a man with mafia ties.

Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune

This book has a classic setup that I adore: a jilted bride (Frankie), her best friend, George, who she’s had on- and off-contact with, and an all-expenses-paid honeymoon to Tofino that she doesn’t want to go on alone. While it might feel like a trope-y premise, it’s still grounded in reality and portrays the beauty and messiness of real-life situations in an estranged friends to lovers romance. Carley Fortune is an absolute queen when it comes to flawed characters and nuanced storylines, so this is one of the best friends to lovers romance books when you want to feel all the feels.

Finders Keepers by Sarah Adler

This is such a fun take on a childhood friends to lovers book romance, blending nostalgia with present-day tension! It’s been seventeen years since Nina and Quentin were neighbors and childhood friends. With Nina’s life at a major turning point (newly single, freshly unemployed), she doesn’t have any reason to say “no” to Quentin when he suggests they continue the treasure hunt they were on as kids—yeah, the one that ended their friendship almost two decades ago. But the reward is just too great to pass up, and Nina sees it as a way to get her life back on track. This is a childhood friends romance that is really fun because sooo much time has passed between them knowing each other as kids, so while they are technically strangers in many ways, there is also some wonderfully built-in history.

The Two Week Roommate by Roxie Noir

A couple of childhood best friends who haven’t spoken for twenty years get snowed in together in a remote cabin in the wilderness. What could possibly go wrong? 🤷‍♀️ This estranged friends to lovers romance novel leans into forced proximity while giving us deeply human characters with real baggage. Gideon, the MMC, is especially swoony—he’s a grump who blushes whenever Andi’s around, and he also has a lot of religious trauma…which has also led him to be a 32-year-old virgin. I’m admittedly not a fan of a female virgin trope (it’s just soooo played out), so it’s fun to have a less experienced Male Main Character!

Fun at Parties by Jamie Harrow

As a proud Peloton rider, I was instantly intrigued by this romance book’s premise: a celebrity spin instructor is forced to take time off after an uncharacteristic mid-class meltdown. She plans to road trip for some tranquil scenery, but ends up offering a ride to her former friend, Nate, to meet up with a mutual friend of theirs. This mutual friend is hard to pin down, and Nate and Quinn basically end up party hopping throughout the US to find them. It’s equally hilarious and adorable, plus there’s plenty of self-discovery along the way to the Happy Ever After. FYI, if you’re more of a friends to lovers sports romance books reader, Jamie Harrow’s other book, One on One, is one to check out!

Lotus by Jennifer Hartmann

Lotus is another dark romance that leans heavily into the emotional weight of an estranged childhood friends romance. Sydney and Oliver were best friends as children until Oliver disappeared one Fourth of July. Twenty-two years later, he’s returned after being held captive underground. There’s obviously a lot of trauma that Oliver has to work through after having been kidnapped and now acclimating to society, and even though Sydney feels their deep connection, she’s also adjusting to having Oliver back in her life again. It’s really touching to see these two work their way back to each other.
