From the moment I sensed a slight crisp in the air and saw the first fallen leaf on the sidewalk, I have been ready for fall. As much as I love summertime, there’s something undeniably fun about those comforting fall months. Cooler weather, warmer drinks, and cozier activities!
Fall is the ideal time to curl up with a good book—and bonus points when that book captures the ultimate fall vibes with a cute small-town setting and autumn timeline. So if you’re looking for the best small-town fall romance books, then this list will give you lots to put on your TBR for the ‘ber months!
Why Small-Town Romances Are Perfect for Fall
Romance books set in small towns are comforting stories to read anytime, and as the weather transitions into fall, they’re the perfect kinds of books to pick up. You’ll get a close-knit community with quirky side characters, and when they’re set in the autumn months, you’ll probably also see typical fall activities—think pumpkin patches, fall festivals, or even comforting backdrops like cafes or bookstores. Small-town romance novels are packed with emotional tension. Sometimes it’s the ache of a second-chance romance story, other times it’s the simmer of a slow burn. No matter what, a small town setting in a romance book gives me that immediate Hallmark-movie feeling that makes me want to settle on the couch with my cats, light a candle, and sip some tea while reading.
Small-Town Fall Romance Books to Add to Your TBR
Super-Cozy Settings
Like bookstores and cafes that you can’t wait to visit! These will give you the ultimate small-town romance autumn setting.
Fall into Place by Kristyn J. Miller - This is a cozy autumn romance will have you falling for its changing leaves, hot apple cider, and unforgettable characters. It’s got one of my favorite tropes—woman starting over—and a Vermont setting, which is the best place to be for fall if you ask me!
Bonfire and Bliss Bookstore by Brittanee Nicole - If you want something spicy and swoony with some complicated friends-to-lovers fake-dating, then this is the book to pick up! The FMC runs a bookstore in her small hometown, and her world is turned upside down when her high school best friend returns home.
Hearts on Hold by Charish Reid - Fall also means back to school, and I love the romance between this professor and librarian! It’s spicy and definitely delivers on the nerdy male librarian trope.
Something About September by Julia McKay - A second-chance, single dad romance that is packed with fall vibes. The added deadline—30 days to renovate the FMC’s late grandmother’s diner—delivers just the right amount of tension.
Small-Town Festivals & Autumnal Events
Books that have one of those quintessential fall events. Halloween, fall festivals, and all things autumn.
Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonham Young - This one starts on Halloween and follows, and the epilogue takes place on Halloween, too! Bo is the ultimate book boyfriend who will have you swooning big time.
By Your Cider by Elser Moira - Set in a small Canadian town called Autumn Creek, this is a a spicy forced proximity romance about a city girl who accidentally moves in with her new co-worker. It’s like Stars Hollow in book form!
Pumpkin Spice and Promises by Nora Everly - A Mr. Pumpkin contest, you say? Small towns are known for having some of the most ridiculous festivities, and the more zany the better. This one has lots of tension and yearning to keep you warm in those cold months :)
Read Between the Lines by Sunny del Williams - If you’re looking for 100% vibes and 0% conflict, then pick this friends to lovers romance on KU. It’s a bantery slow burn, but once you do get to the spice, it is 🔥.
Fall Vibes & Set in the ‘Ber Months
For when you want that autumn atmosphere without fall being the main event. These romances give off strong autumn feels or take place during the cozy ‘ber months, making them perfect for seasonal reading.
If It Makes You Happy by Julie Olivia - Grab your favorite fall candle, cuddle into a comfy blanket, and travel back in time to 1997 in this cozy, slow-burn romance set in the autumn glow of small-town Vermont. I’m not usually a single parent romance reader, but I really liked this one!
The Half of It by Theresa Christine - Fancy a trip to Ireland in the fall? This small-town romance on KU takes place in early fall and follows the characters until the end of the year. You get lots of fun Irish sightseeing, plus a spicy slow burn that’s worth the wait.
Catch and Keep by Erin Hahn - This is a cozy, swoony romance with my favorite kind of MMC: a cinnamon roll hero. This one has some beautiful character development, plus no third-act breakup.
Magical Fall Romances
Choose one of these books if you want a little bit of magic with your fave fall read! Think witches or romantasy.
The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling - For all the Hocus Pocus lovers out there, this book captures that same feeling but with spice. Enough said!
Meet Cute Magic by Morgan Elizabeth - An adorable enemies to lovers romance between a bookshop-owning witch and a nerdy game store owner. This one was super cozy!
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna - A warm and uplifting novel about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a quirky new family—and a new love—changes the course of her life. This one is a fan fave for a reason—it’s super cozy!
My Checklist for the Perfect Small-Town Fall Romance
Every book is a little different, but when I think about what I’m looking for in the perfect fall read, I want…
a small-town setting (obviously)
cute local shops that the characters frequent, like a cozy cafe or a neighborhood bookstore
events that signal the season—Halloween festivities, going to an apple orchard or pumpkin patch, or a drive somewhere to see the leaves changing colors
chillier weather, an MMC in a chunky sweater, and if he gives her his jacket when he notices she’s getting cold? *swoon*
some delicious romantic tension that heats things up
Set the Mood for Your Cozy Fall Reading Session
Since moving somewhere that doesn’t get much daylight in the fall and winter seasons, I’ve definitely learned to lean into the cozy vibes when I sit down to read. A few of my recommendations:
candles! - IMHO, you can never overdo it in this department
something tasty to drink - hot cocoa if you have a sweet tooth like me, but tea is good, too!
a warm blanket - something to curl up in
crummy weather - okay, you might not have full control over this, but I’ve found that sitting at home and reading is waaaay more fun when it’s stormy outside
relaxing background music - I opt for something instrumental usually, like lofi or some kind of chill music station
cats - optional, but I find they make the best reading buddies :)
No matter what you’re looking for, I hope you’ve found a few books to add to your fall TBR!
And whether it’s fall or not, nothing beats picking up a small-town romance with autumn vibes to feel extra cozy. Now all you have to do is grab your favorite warm drink, curl up under a blanket, and get lost in your next swoon-worthy autumn romance.
